SUPREME COURT TO HEAR NEW OBAMACARE CHALLENGE

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court scheduled a hearing on a new challenge to Obamacare. On March 25, 2014, the Court will hear arguments on whether or not individuals who own closely-held corporations can object to Obamacare’s contraceptive mandate on religious grounds. The contraceptive mandate is the requirement that employers either pay a fine or provide employees with health care that covers birth control. An opinion in that case is expected sometime in June 2014.

Also of note, Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor granted a request by a religious-affiliated organization last week that temporarily freezes the Obama Administration’s power to enforce the contraceptive mandate. If the full Court decides to take up that case, they will determine the constitutionality of the contraceptive mandate.

SENATE CONFIRMS NEW FEDERAL RESERVE CHAIRMAN

Last week, the Senate went "nuclear" on one of President Obama’s nominees. For the first time since Senator Harry Reid changed the Senate rules to end debate with less than 60 votes, the so-called “nuclear option,” a nominee to head a Federal agency has been confirmed with only 56 Senators voting in favor. One of the hallmarks of the Senate is that it has provided powers for the minority party to help curtail runaway government. The Founders' “cooling saucer” is now a chamber where votes can be fast-tracked with less debate. This is a troubling development.

More specifically to Chairman-elect Janet Yellen, the Federal Reserve has taken unprecedented monetary steps in recent years to expand the nation’s money supply with the stated objective of increasing full employment. This is not what the Federal Reserve is supposed to be doing. I’m concerned that Janet Yellen will only get the Fed more involved in circumspect activities.

The Federal Reserve clearly needs to be more accountable to the American people. That is why I am a proud cosponsor of “Audit the Fed,” a bill introduced by our Georgia neighbor Representative Paul Broun that would provide greater clarity of the Federal Reserve’s operations. My promise to you is that I will continue to fight for greater Federal Reserve transparency and accountability.

ELIMINATING WASTEFUL FEDERAL SPENDING

Last year, the Oversight and Government Reform Committee (OGR) passed a number of bills to increase transparency and accountability in federal spending and to eliminate waste. Unfortunately, very few bills have made it past the Senate and to the President’s desk, and so the government continues to waste billions of taxpayer dollars on unnecessary and duplicative programs. My counterparts on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Ranking Member Dr. Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Chairman Tom Carper (D-DE), testified last Thursday at a House OGR hearing about potential reforms that have bipartisan support that we can quickly sign into law. Many of these ideas are outlined in Dr. Coburn’s annual “Wastebook.”

House OGR Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) pledged to immediately hold a vote on any good government bill that Dr. Coburn and Chairman Carper pass out of their committee. These savings and reforms won’t require Congress to find consensus on difficult policy issues like entitlements and tax reform; they simply require Congress to act on those issues on which we agree. I am convinced that in 2014 the House, the Senate, and the President can come together to make much-needed changes and reforms, and you can be sure I will keep our committee focused on this important opportunity.

CUTTING UNNECESSARY FEDERAL RED TAPE

Last Thursday, the House passed H.R. 2279, the “Reducing Excessive Deadline Obligations Act of 2013.” The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a laudable goal – to preserve the environment and protect human health – but many of the EPA’s regulations are badly in need of reform, especially those that are duplicative or terribly dated due to advancements in technology and science. H.R. 2279 seeks to addresses just that in the area of solid waste disposal. The bill removes outdated and unnecessary deadlines on the EPA that were enacted as far back as 1976. Additionally, by relieving the EPA of the responsibility for creating federal regulations where sufficient state regulations exist, this bill focuses EPA's attention on areas of greatest need while relieving employers of duplicative burdens. I am pleased that this bill passed the House last week, and I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will act expeditiously on it.

VETERANS ASSISTANCE OPEN HOUSE

I am pleased to announce that I will be hosting a Veterans Assistance Open House on Thursday, January 23, 2014, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. The Open House will be held in the auditorium breezeway at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive, Lawrenceville. If you or a veteran in your life is struggling to access or understand the veterans benefits that you have earned, I will have all of the experts in one place to help you.

Participating in this Open House will be representatives from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Atlanta Regional Office and Medical Center, the Lawrenceville Vet Center, the Georgia Department of Veterans Service, the Canton National Cemetery, and the Georgia Department of Labor. These folks will be available to answer questions about existing claims, VA home loans, educational benefits, and VA health care, along with other issues important to veterans.

If you are a veteran or know a veteran, this will be a wonderful opportunity to meet with a representative to get answers to your questions about forms, claims, what educational benefits are available to you, and receiving medical care at a VA facility. Navigating the VA system can be difficult for many individuals, but I want you to know that I am committed to working with you to make the experience more manageable.

THE WEEK AHEAD

· The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will be holding a hearing on Thursday, January 16th to investigate the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' security concerns about Healthcare.gov. Ensuring that Americans’ personal identification information remains secure is of utmost important to the House, and we will not rest until we can ensure that the Obama Administration is taking information security seriously.

· The House may consider an omnibus appropriations bill this week that will provide funding for all Federal government agencies through September 31, 2014. This bill is the result of serious negotiations between House and Senate Appropriations Committees and fulfills our Constitutional duty to appropriate funds for the proper functioning of our government. While I know that I won't support every line of this omnibus, I am pleased that we have come together to agree on an overall funding level with the Senate and the President. Everyone knows how much deficits have exploded under this President, but we now have an agreement to move a bill to the President's desk that will fund the Federal government for 2014 at levels even lower than President Bush anticipated. This is progress that you can be proud of!
